JV's Step Up

The Junior Varsity team stepped up and replaced the Varsity team in the very prestigious West Coast Classic tournament in South Orange County over the Christmas vacation.  The JV team did Esperanza proud by competing strongly with  some of the top Varsity teams in Southern California.  With college coaches and  local media on hand, the team competed in three games and gave the opponents  everything they could handle.  In fact, both Michael Doyen and Robbie Jepson each  had action pictures in the OC Register for the game against the #3 team in Orange  County, the Santa Margarita Eagles.  All in all, the JV team showed that Esperanza  soccer has a very bright future!

Congratulations to Robby Shelansky
Orange County Register's Athlete of the Week

Robby was named Athlete of the week on January 22, 2008. The paper included his photo and the following note:  "The senior scored two goals - including the tying goal - to lead the Aztecs to a 3-2 upset victory against then-No. 4 Los Alamitos in Sunset League play Friday in Los Alamitos."

From the Miguel Melendez OC Register blog (OC Register sports writer on the soccer beat):

THE ESPERANZA-LOS ALAMITOS match was a great one. Obviously, Griffin fans will not say the same, but from a reporter’s point of view it was a great match to see  and write about. Esperanza scored two goals in the last seven minutes of play to  win the game. It was amazing how suddenly the Aztecs had the fire lid from under  them and they responded like the veteran team I expected to see this season.

Coach Kino Oaxaca was excited as ever. I had never seen him that excited. He hugged his players and lost his voice with all the yelling, which paid off.

I found it interesting that Oaxaca said, “If we play the way we finished playing”. He completely disregarded the Aztecs’ play during the first half and most of the second half and who could blame him? It was a completely different team during the final 15  minutes of the match; Esperanza pushing desperately; slipping into gaps and exposed a rather surprised Griffins team that laid back for most of the second half.
