The Aztecs met the Chargers trying to take their revenge for a 3-0 thrashing at Edison. This match would also catapult Esperanza into first place with a win.
It was a scoreless first half, punctuated by shots from both sides either flying wide of the goal or being corralled by the keepers.
In the 58th minute, Damon Baker’s (10) corner kick rattled around the six-yard box before David Vasquez (8) toed the ball into the goal for a 1-0 Aztec lead.
In the 68th minute, a Chargers defender passed the ball back to his keeper, who whiffed on the bouncing ball, and Jayson Biedebach made the unopposed tap-in for a 2-0 lead.
That’s where the score stood two minutes later, and the Aztecs had completed their attempt to split the season with Edison. The win vaulted the Aztecs into a first place tie with Los Alamitos.
