The Aztecs came into the game against Los Alamitos following ten days off due to rain. The winner of the game would have a shot at the Sunset League title. The loser would be in third-place.
The Aztecs started the scoring in the 13th minute when a corner kick into the six-yard box rattled around the feet of both friend and foe alike. Scott Rice (9) settled the ball and found the back of the net from the right side to give Esperanza a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, however, the Griffins equalized on a nice ball rolled into the goal at the far post.
Matt Nelson’s (14) corner kick was rammed home by Christ Berkeley (3) giving the Aztecs a 21st minute 2-1 lead.
The Aztecs added to their lead when a free kick from the left side of the 18 yard box by Matt Nelson (14) was headed in by David Vasquez (8), and the lead was 3-1 at the half.’
In the second half, the Griffins showed why they are a tough rival, when they headed in a corner kick unmarked to cut the deficit to 3-2 in minute 45.
The 63rd minute saw the Griffins tie the match at 3-3.
Despite a flurry of offense from both sides in the closing minutes, the match ended in a 3-3 draw.
