January 15 at Edison
It was a beautiful, warm, winter’s day in Huntington Beach. One that might have inspired the song “California Dreamin”.
The Aztecs took on the Chargers in a very important league game. Neither side had lost a game, and first place was at stake.
The Chargers showed good ball movement on the attack, and in the 27th minute, a cross came from the left side of the Aztec goal. Connor Nelson got a hand on it to deflect the cross, by and Edison Mid-fielder took the rebound, but shot it wide-right.
The Aztecs countered in the 29th minute, but a shot from Alejandro Gonzalez (4) crossed the goal and went out.
Finally, in the 31st minute, the Chargers put the ball past the Aztec keeper, after a defender fell down, and took a 1-0 lead.
It stayed 1-0 Edison until the half.
In the 50th minute Blake Russie (23) crossed a ball to Damon Baker (10). His half-volley shot went just over the frame.
Scott Rice (9) and Connor Nelson (1) collided in the 55th minute, and a Charger made the easy tap-in to make the game 2-0.
The scoring ended in the 69th minute when three Edison players worked the ball back and forth against two Aztec defenders. The play ended with the Chargers’ third goal.
Oh, somewhere hearts are happy, and somewhere children shout, but there was no joy in Vod-ville, as the Aztecs were shutout.
