On a chilly, overcast day threatened with rain, the Aztecs met the Sailors in a Sunset League match.
The first 10 minutes both teams were feeling each other out, mounting forays into enemy territory, but no serious attacks resulted.
In the 12th minute, however, Matt Nelson (14) threw the ball into the Newport Harbor box, where Scott Rice (10) flicked it to David Velasquez (8), who found the back of the net to start the scoring. The Aztecs lead 1-0.
The 15th minute saw the Aztecs increase their lead to 2-0 when Brady Johansen (20) received a throw from Matt Nelson (14), and powered the ball past the keeper from 20 yard out.
The scoring continued in the 20th minute, when Austin Lent (21) scored off a flick from Damon Baker (10), giving the Aztecs a 3-0 lead.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the 28th minute. Damon Baker (10) flicked a ball to Austin Lent (21), who found the back of the net.
The half ended with Esperanza holding a 4-0 lead.
Six minutes into the second half, the Sailors cut into the lead with a 30 yard indirect kick.
Seven minutes later, in the 48th minute, Connor Nelson preserved the lead with a terrific diving save on a Newport Harbor shot.
In the 60th minute, the Aztec keeper again turned away the Sailors.
Finally, with 5 minutes left to play Newport Harbor scored to make it a 4-2 game, but they never were able to get any closer.
